DOVER STREET MARKET New York
Wednesday, January 8th, 2014DOVER STREET MARKET New York
A shopping mecca in which street-wear and high-end design are intertwined, Rei Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market is now open in New York. The seven-floor luxury department store takes visitors on a whimsical exploration of avant-garde fashion design from designers such as Simone Rocha to Jacquemus, all woven into the story of Kawakubo’s own line, Comme des Garçons. With no clear differentiation between women and men’s collections, visitors are encouraged to explore the store with an unconstricted outlook. Non-fashion related attractions include specially commissioned artworks that can be found throughout the store as well as a Rose Bakery pop up on the first floor. Kawakubo gave designers creative freedom to model their respective spaces in a manner that architecturally represents the designs; a key highlight being the permanent Prada space enveloped by large scale Pierre Mornet murals pursuant to the Spring/Summer 2014 collection. In Kawakubo’s own words, Dover Street Market will exist as “an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos”.
